Here’s the story behind how I came up with my game plan and why I wrote this book. It began one day when the Check Engine light in my car came on. I groaned, dreading the ordeal of taking my car to a dealership to have the problem evaluated. I’d recently seen a report on a local TV news station explaining how and why car repair scams are common, which made me feel nervous and paranoid.
I chose a dealership with a stellar reputation. But when I spoke to the service representative, my skin crawled. Everything about her felt wrong – the way she spoke to me, the way she acted, and the things she told me. But I thought, What else can I do? I’m not a mechanic. What other choice do I have than to take her at her word?
The experience was a disaster. A couple of days after my car was fixed, the Check Engine light came on again. I took it back and was appalled that the same service representative wanted to charge me even more to fix what she’d missed the first time. Again, what else could I do? I had the car repaired. Again.
That’s when an idea hit me. My experience as a journalist and technical writer smashed into the skills I’d learned on my new job, and an idea hit me. I had a hunch. I did a test to see if my hunch would work – and it did! I then came up with a game plan of simple, easy-to-follow steps that anyone can follow. The next time my car needed repair, I used my plan and cut the cost in half. I saved $500.
So one of the worst experiences of my life led me to figure out how to protect myself from car repair scams for the rest of my life. I can teach you how to do the same.
